Grievance in the application is against violation of environmental norms by dumping of coal in 35 bighas in the vicinity of residential area at Krishnashila railway siding, Bina, Shaktinagar, district Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, which is the land of the Northern Coal Field Limited. Coal has been dumped without any permission and is accumulated through illegal transportation from coal fields.

Measures are being taken to control the air pollution due to the loading and unloading of coal by vehicles plying on the Hal road of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL) Khadia project at Shakti Nagar, Sonbhadra. This is adjacent to the rehabilitated village of Chilkadand in violation of environmental norms, creating heavy dust pollution and health hazard to local residents.

Bharat Coking Coal (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India (CIL), has come under the Competition Commission of India (CCI) scanner for floating a vendor-biased global tender against the country’s competition rule, thereby compromising the safety of mines.

A source in the CCI told FE that BCCL floated a tender in November 2012 asking for Mine Slope Stability Monitoring Radar. But the specifications given were out dated and not vendor neutral. The specification only supported one technology — Real Aperture Radar (RAR) system.
