The Delhi High Court today dismissed a petition by Tata Power Company challenging the use of surplus coal from the captive coal mines of Sasan ultra mega power project (UMPP) for other projects of Anil Ambani-controlled Reliance Power. Tata Power said the company would appeal the decision in the Supreme Court.

In what is termed a substantial positive development on the aim of fully reviving the Dabhol power project, General Electric (GE) has agreed to charge only half the cost of repairing its allegedly faulty turbines, instead of the full amount.

The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has failed to improve the power situation in the metropolis since its privatisation. To meet the immediate need of power for Karachi the company should install "barge mounted power plants", which can be secured and inducted in the grid system without any serious difficulty.

The present government will need its full five-year tenure to generate power to the level the ruling Awami League had pledged before the elections to do in three years.

"What we pledged in the election manifesto to do in three years, we' ll be able to do in our five-year tenure," Finance Minister AMA Muhith told reporters yesterday.

Expects to commission another 500 MW unit later this year.
