New insights into the debates on rural indebtedness in 19th century Deccan

The peasantry in the Deccan suffered from widespread indebtedness during the 19th century. In March 1881, after touring the rural areas of Poona and Ahmadnagar districts, which were still recovering from the devastations caused by famine and the credit crunch followed by the peasant revolt of 1876-79, Mahadev Govind Ranade proposed the establishment of agricultural-shetkari banks.

Chemical fire' sends a chill

THERE was panic in Pimpri-Chinchwad on Saturday afternoon, when thick smoke, visible from afar, snaked skyward in Bhosari area.

The cause was a major fire at ELKAY Chemicals Pvt. Limited and Shivam Industries. The fire that broke out at around 3.40 pm raged till 6.30 pm, when it was finally brought under control. No casualty was reported. But there were some injuries.

Crocodile creates a splash at Katraj

Pune, November 17 After a crocodile was spotted on the banks of Katraj lake, located behind the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park by some visitors on Saturday, zoo employees on Monday carried out a "casual search" for the reptile.
