Says water below 100 feet is highly saline and non-potable

In a recent move, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to restrict the depth of borewells and tubewells in the city to 100 feet. This comes after the civic body asked the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Pune, to
examine the underground water in the city.

The primary report submitted by CWPRS revealed that the underground water had high saline content and was, therefore, not fit for drinking.

Pune, August 25 Even as the mystery behind the deaths of 27 peafowls in Khedkar Wasti near Ranjangaon in Shirur taluka remains unsolved, villagers of Raut Wadi in Shikrapur, about 15 km from Khedkar Wasti, have alleged that unknown miscreants may have killed two peacocks in the region for meat.
The villagers suspect that a group of construction labourers working on a water project being implemented by the state government near Raut Wadi may have killed the fowls.

Former Maharash tra minister Dharmarao Atram not only killed the endangered chinkara but also "watched it being cut into pieces by his partners in crime'.

This has been revealed in statements of eyewitnesses submitted to the high court which rejected Atram's bail plea and asked him to surrender before the forest subdivisional officer at Bhor in Pune district on August 28.

Latest projections indicate that after 2050, temperatures would rise by 3-4 degrees over current levels and rainfall would become both heavier and less regular, posing a grave threat to agriculture. These are part of the research conducted by scientists at Pune's Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, one of the key government institutions studying climate change in India. The findings are currently under review by a well-recognized scientific journal.

Pune, July 30: A mild tremor was experienced in Pune and parts of Maharashtra with its epicentre at Koyna dam region in Satara district, the Met office said on Wednesday morning.

The tremor, felt past midnight at 12:40 am, lasted for around seven seconds and measured 4.2 on the Richter scale. According to sources at Koyna, there was no damage to the dam where a power generation plant of the state electricity distribution company Mahavitaran is located.
