The Green Goa Foundation has threatened to launch a public movement against the unhygienic conditions in Colmorod and neighbouring areas unless the sewage mess is cleared within a week.

Is disconnecting water supply to residential buildings an answer to discharge of sewage in storm water drains in the absence of an underground sewerage line?

This question has come to the fore a day after the Margao Civic body issued notices for disconnection of water supply to as many as seven buildings housing around 200 apartments.

In a shocking revelation the Delhi Committee of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has said that there are more than one lakh open drains in the Capital.

Waterlogging constitutes the most challenging problem in the Gangetic plains of the state affecting agricultural productivity. Attempts have been made by various departments and agencies in sectoral manner for prevention and reclamation of flooding, water clogging and degraded lands but the impacts have not been satisfactory.

Civic engineers are exploring the possibility of laying an underground pipeline from Subhas Sarobar to the Hooghly, alongside the proposed East-West Metro tunnel, to solve the waterlogging problem in the city proper.

Over 20 waterlogging-prone city pockets, from Camac Street to Shyambazar, could benefit from the project, according to the engineers.

Most of these projects in Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot and Vadodara that had approvals, are in various stages of implementation and were clocking delays awaiting fresh releases from the state and Centre.

AHMEDABAD : Just before Lok Sabha elections, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) unveiled a Rs 285-crore sewerage network for newly-acquired areas of new west zone. Most of the works are being undertaken under JNNURM. The areas to be covered include seven major pockets in the new west zone.
