Mohali: Even after a year of its commissioning, the sewage treatment plant (STP) in Mohali remains a non-starter. Reason: The Northern Railways is not allowing a pipeline to be laid under its tracks.

President Asif Zardari has directed the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) to build a large sewerage dam, where industrial waste would also be collected and filtered, after which the water obtained would be used for parks and trees in the city as part of the Green City plan, Sindh Minister for Fisheries Zahid Ali Bhurgari told Daily Times.

The Punjab government is likely to enhance allocation for water supply and sanitation to Rs9.32 billion in the upcoming budget for 2009-10, official sources said.

The work on improving the drainage and sewerage systems in Kolkata may cost around Rs 20,000 crore, though in phases, according to Mr Alapan Bandopadhyay, Commissioner, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).
