A total ban on smoking in public will come into force soon, the Health Ministry said.

This study presents the first estimate of the worldwide burden of disease and premature death attributable to exposure to second-hand smoke (SHS) during 2004 through a retrospective analysis of data from 192 countries. The resulting burden of disease is measured as number of deaths and loss of diability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for children and adult non-smokers.

Agartala, May 30: Tripura has emerged as third highest tobacco consuming state in the country after Mizoram and Nagaland, Dr Goutam Majumder, Superintendent of Regional Cancer Centre said here yesterday. He said despite imposition of ban on smoking in public places, about 55.9 per cent of people in Tripura had been consuming tobacco (67.2 per cent in Mizoram and 56.8 per cent in Nagaland).

In probably the first such large-scale study of its kind, Sekhsaria Institute of Public Health, in collaboration with the ministry of health proved that bidis and other forms of tobacco (supari, gutkha, among others) are more harmful than cigarettes.

The study had a follow-up period of 5.5 years with as many as 87, 222 male members from Mumbai participating in it.

Cracking whip against errant hookah parlours in the city, Bombay high court today directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to incorporate the rules under `Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act' (COTPA) in the license agreements.

With this, the BMC will have the power to revoke the license if a hookah parlour violates COTPA rules.
