The Supreme Court upheld the decision of the National Green Tribunal, Southern Zone which set aside the ex post facto clearance granted by the Union government to K T V Health Food and KTV Oil Mills (one of the largest edible oil companies in South India) for its edible oil storage and transit terminal.

The Fisheries Department, government of Tamil Nadu vide its order dated March 25, 2000 had banned the use of Purse Seine Fishing nets within its territorial waters - within 12 nautical miles (22 kms from the coast line).

The bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Sudhir Agarwal of the NGT said that "it is disheartening to note that such incident has been repeated due to negligence on the part of the management, which calls for serious soul-searching at local level of management as well as stringent remedial action at higher level in the establishment."

The NGT had taken cognizance of the media article on six industries in north Chennai polluting air for more than half the year.

The industries listed in the media report were the following - North Chennai Thermal Power Station; NTPC Tamil Nadu Energy Company Limited; Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited; Tamil Nadu Petro Products Limited; Manali Petrochemicals Limited and Madras Fertilizers Limited.
