Puram Gollapalle, a forest fringe hamlet near Srikalahasti, about 60 km from here, on Monday when forest department personnel tried to stop about 500 tribals led by the Communist Party of India (CPI) state secretary, Mr K. Narayana, from encroaching on forest land.
Tirupati, March 22: About 10,000 hectares of forest in the Bhakarapet and Tirupati ranges were burnt down in during the last two days. The fires were raging even on Monday night.
Villagers have blamed forest officials for the spread of the fire, saying that they did not respond quickly despite repeated calls.
