The Karnataka Prantha Raitha Sangha (KPRS) has urged the Government not to give permission for cultivation of Bt brinjal in India.

A 'baigan bharta' with a whooping 20,000 brinjals will be prepared in the national capital by an environmental group to create awareness against genetically modified brinjals, now at the centre of a raging controversy.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the Fadama phase-one vegetable production project of the Anambra State Agricultural Development Project (ADP). Data for the study were collected from 160 vegetable growers (80 project farmers and 80 non-project farmers), through the use of a set of structured interview schedule.

The minister of state for environment and forests, Mr Jairam Ramesh, on Sunday said the final decision on Bt Brinjal will be taken on February 10.

Mr Ramesh had to face the ire of farmers during a public consultation that was organised by the Central Research Institute for Dryland Agriculture (CRIDA).

Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh today said a final decision over allowing commercial introduction of Bt brinjal in the country would be taken in 10 days, as he faced more protests over the controversial move.

As his national consultations entered the last lap, Ramesh was gheraoed here by people opposing the commercialisation of the Genetically Modified food crop.
