Enthused by the Krishi Karman award conferred on the State government for achieving milestones in food production, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced Rs. 99 crore for the command area development and water management (CADWM) programme in Villupuram, Cuddalore and Tiruvannamalai districts.

The State government has allotted 10,000 concrete houses to be built for cyclone ‘Thane’ affected people of Villupuram district, according to Collector V. Sampath.

Addressing a meeting of officials on procedures to be adopted in the implementation of the scheme here on Tuesday, he said that each unit would be built on 200 sq.ft of land at a cost of Rs. 1 lakh.

The Tamil Nadu Government has posted John Louis as Special Officer, in the rank of District Revenue Officer, to oversee the survey and assessment of granite quarries, now under way, in Madurai district. District Collector Anshul Mishra, who is heading the revenue team in inspecting the quarries and monitoring the progress on a daily basis, said on Tuesday that Mr. Louis, who was earlier serving in Villupuram district, would primarily oversee the surveys being carried out in the granite quarries and the assessments being made by the team members.

The Tamil Nadu Government would construct one lakh concrete houses for the people in Cuddalore and Viluppuram districts, hit badly by cyclone Thane last year.

Under the Centrally-sponsored Nirmal Bharat Abiyan scheme it has been proposed to construct as many as 53,405 individual toilets in Villupuram district during 2012-2013, according to Collector V.Sampath.

Addressing a review meeting here the Collector said that the Centre had rechristened the Total Sanitation Programme as the Nirmal Bharat Abiyan. Under the scheme individual toilets would be built at a cost of Rs 10,000 each. For the purpose the district administration had sought a financial assistance of Rs 76.51 crore, the Collector said.

The State government has released a sum of Rs 9.05 crore to be disbursed to ‘Thane’ cyclone-affected farmers, who had been enlisted but are yet to get relief, said V. Sampath, Collector.

Addressing an official meeting here, he said the cyclone destroyed agricultural and horticultural crops and fishing resources in Vanur, Marakkanam, Koliyanur, Kandamangalam, Thirunavalur and Thiruvennainallur panchayat unions in the district.
