A new technology to convert waste to energy might help India deal with its mounting garbage woes

Indian cities are expanding with the increase in population and economic activities. Identification of landfill site in such cities has become a challenging issue for the municipalities. Non-existence of proper land use plan of Urban Authorities has aggravated the situation further leading to failure in solid waste management.

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has allowed the Okhla waste-to-energy plant to function while imposing an environmental compensation of Rs. 25 lakh on it for causing pollution.

The Petitioners Resident Welfare Association of Sukhdev Vihar, Jasola Vihar, and Ishwar Nagar had approached the High Court of Delhi by filing Public Interest Litigation under Article 226 of the Constitution of India praying that the construction of the proposed Waste to Energy plant close to Okhla STP should be stopped.

Order of the National Green Tribunal in the matter of Sukhdev Vihar Residents Welfare Association & Ors. Vs. State of NCT of Delhi & Ors. dated 23/12/2016. According to the Counsel appearing for the South Delhi Municipal Corporation they are entitled to 6.14% on revenue sharing basis for power generation (waste to energy plant) from the date of plant commissioned for power generation. However, according to the Project Proponent they are liable to pay 3% of the revenue sharing for power generation eight years from the date of commencement.
