In a joint inspection carried by various government bodies, the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on Monday collected samples from contaminated rivulets which burst into flames on Saturday evening at Shindolim-Jina, Sancoale for examination.

The taskforce on saving the Buriganga river, maintaining its normal flow and navigability submitted its report to the government on Wednesday.

Taskforce Chairman and former chairman of the Privatisation Commission Enam Ahmed Choudhury handed the report to Adviser for Agriculture and Water Resources Dr CS Karim at his secretariat office. Other members of the taskforce were present.

In a tell-tale reminder of the extent of pollution in water bodies in the City, at least 25,000 fish died due to contamination in Siddapura lake.

The fish had died three days ago, but they surfaced only on Wednesday.

The residents were in for a rude shock on Wednesday morning as thousands of dead fish were seen floating in the lake.

The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry is investigating public complaints regarding contaminated bottled drinking water, Public Health Services Deputy Director General Dr. Palitha Maheepala said.
