The National Green Tribunal (NGT)’s recent ban on unauthorised river sand-mining is expected to go a long way in saving the Bharathapuzha.
The order is expected to save many rivers in the State which have been over-exploited and destroyed by sand-mining. Various committees had pointed out that sand-mining caused erosion of riverbanks, reduction of flow, and a consequent destruction of river eco-systems.

Restrains U.P. govt. from permitting such digging until further orders of tribunal. In a blow to brick-kiln industry and road contractors, the National Green Tribunal has banned digging of earth across the country for making bricks and laying roads without prior environment clearance (EC).

to carry out any such digging activities of brick earth or ordinary earth against the directives issued by the MoEF dated 24.06.2013 in any part of the country without obtaining EC from the competent authority as per the Notification. The Chief Secretaries of all the States/UTs are to ensure strict adherence to this order.
