IIT against storm drain covers

Scientists from Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi working on city's drainage master plan don't think it's a good idea to cover storm water drains.

While there may not be any harm in covering drains carrying only storm water, most of Delhi's storm water drains carry sewage water that emanates noxious gases and can cause severe groundwater pollution if trapped. A team from IIT is studying the impact of covering drains along with other aspects of the drainage system.

Illegal construction in Okhla sanctuary: NGT raps UP govt for not notifying eco-sensitive zone

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) criticised the Uttar Pradesh government for failing to designate eco-sensitive zones (ESZ) around the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, in spite of being given time to do so.

A bench headed by Justice P Jyothimani directed UP government to send a proposal on ESZ around the sanctuary to the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF), by January 3, 2014, the next date of hearing.
