This FAO report outlines the extent to which sound management of forests and tree planting can reduce the incidence of landslides and how forestation can assist in land rehabilitation and stabilization after landslides have occurred.

The Asia-Pacific region is home to over 900 million poor. Most are in rural areas and there is considerable overlap with forest areas. As such, the forestry sector developments are intimately engaged with poverty issues.

Continuing high rates of deforestation and forest degradation and the poor contribution of forests and forestry to poverty reduction are undermining efforts to promote sustainable forest management
(SFM) in many countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
