The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is engaged in the satellite mapping of the country's wetlands and will complete the project by the end of August, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said Thursday.

Using satellite data, scientists have produced a first-of-its kind map that details the height of the world's forests. Although there are other local- and regional-scale forest canopy maps, the new map is the first that spans the entire globe based on one uniform method.

The Environment Ministry and Coal Ministry have initiated a joint exercise to identify and map coal reserves in forests for coal mining.

Contour maps detailing the city

With a view to prevent illegal mining and loot of precious mineral resources as well as to usher in greater efficiency in the mining operations, the state government has decided to prepare maps of all the mining areas on the lines of revenue maps.

NEW DELHI: In the next four years, the Survey of India (SoI) will plant permanent pillars and wooden pegs at intervals all along the coast, clearly demarcating the hazard line to residents, visitors and prospective developers for the next century.

In a unique initia tive, the ministry of environment and forests (MoEF) and the Survey of India (SoI) will map the entire 1500 km coastline to draw up a hazard based mapping process in order to help protect the coastal population from cyclones, tides and tsunami.
