The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is engaged in the satellite mapping of the country's wetlands and will complete the project by the end of August, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said Thursday.
Using satellite data, scientists have produced a first-of-its kind map that details the height of the world's forests. Although there are other local- and regional-scale forest canopy maps, the new map is the first that spans the entire globe based on one uniform method.
With a view to prevent illegal mining and loot of precious mineral resources as well as to usher in greater efficiency in the mining operations, the state government has decided to prepare maps of all the mining areas on the lines of revenue maps.
