MIDNAPORE, 3 JULY: The dredging of canals of Keleghai-Kapaleswari-Bagui river scheme which had been held up for years is proceeding on a war footing. It is likely to be completed in three years.

Waterlogging and secondary salinisation have become serious problems in canal irrigated areas of arid and semi-arid regions. This study examined hydrology and estimated the seasonal net groundwater recharge of an irrigated semi-arid region located in the Haryana State of India where about 500 000 ha area are waterlogged and unproductive, and the size of the waterlogged area is increasing, causing a threat to agricultural sustainability.

This article is a systematic documentation and analysis of events that motivated development of irrigation in Madras Presidency in general and Krishna district in particular. In Krishna district, when the anicut was built in 1855, the phase-wise excavation of canals determined the phases of development of irrigation (1855-1900; 1900-1965 and 1965-2001) leading to three agro-climatic regions in the district viz., delta, moderate and dry regions (taluks).

A price increase and improvement in the terms of trade of agriculture after 2004-05 have revived agriculture in Uttar Pradesh. JAIPUR: Farmers have been sitting on a demonstration since May 10 to protest against the alleged theft of water from canal flowing from Haryana and Punjab to Sriganganagar and Hanumangarah districts in Rajasthan.

They alleged that theft of water from the canals had affected their agriculture activities badly. "We are not getting the amount of water from the canals which we should get because the farmers in Punjab and Haryana are taking the water from the canals illegally through big water pumps," Krishan Kumar Saharan, state president Rajasthan Kisan Union said.
