BEIJING: China's latest tainted product crisis widened Friday after tests found the chemical melamine in liquid milk produced by three of the country's leading dairy companies, the country's quality monitor said.

MELBOURNE: Kirin, the Japanese brewer, is expanding its food business in Australia through the acquisition of Dairy Farmers by its National Foods division.

The acquisition, for 910 million Australian dollars, or $780 million, is intended to help it diversify away from a shrinking domestic beer market.

The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) has agreed to expand its network to all taluks, he said after inaugurating an Entrepreneurship Motivation Programme organised by Karnataka State Finance Corporation and Industries and Commerce department at the District Industries Centre here on Wednesday.

Small and medium farmers of the district facing financial crisis will get 2,000 mixed breed cows under the Prime Ministers Vidarbha Special Package, a scheme of the Central government to prevent farmers suicides.

Animal Husbandry Department Deputy Director Dr M T Manjunath told Deccan Herald that the decision was taken during the district implementation committee meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner K R Niranjan.

Reports that cattle have been struck by different kinds of disease in Canacona and Ponda talukas is disturbing news for the 180-odd dairy societies in the state, as well as for the Goa Dairy, which already imports most of its milk from neighbouring Maharashtra and Karnataka. A mysterious disease has been slowly but steadily killing a number of cattle at Veling-Priol and Kundaim in Ponda taluka during the past fortnight, prompting veterinary officials to urge dairy farmers to get their cattle vaccinated.

To increase genetic diversity of cattle Regulatory authority planned THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The State cattle breeding policy, announced by Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan here on Monday, proposes more attention to improvement of the genetic stock of cattle in Kasaragod, Kannur, Wayanad, Malappuram, Idukki and Palakkad districts. This is in view of the backwardness of these districts in artificial insemination and other breeding activities.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Mehra said all the illegal dairies running in urban areas would be relocated in Ghogha Dairy Colony by August 31. "In the first phase, 2,000 plots with adequate infrastructural facilities have been developed. The second draw of lots will be held shortly.'
