81 people under treatment for dengue fever in various government hospitals

Pre-monsoon showers have heightened the dengue fever threat in Pathanamthitta, especially in the hilly tracts of the district. District Medical Officer Gracy Ithaq told The Hindu that as on Thursday, 81 people were undergoing treatment for dengue fever in various government hospitals in the district.

KOTTAYAM: Around 50 cases of dengue fever were reported at the Medical College Hospital here on Tuesday.

Dengue has reached an explosive situation in the capital even before the monsoon has set in, with 750 cases reported in the district this year, till date.

The health authorities are concerned about the fact that unlike in the previous years, the mortality rate of dengue seems to be much higher this year, with 14 deaths — two confirmed and 12 suspected — being reported in the district in the past four months itself.

Traditionally, the four dengue virus serotypes have been associated with fever, rash, and the more severe forms, haemorrhagic fever and shock syndrome. As our knowledge as well as understanding of these viruses increases, we now recognise not only that they are causing increasing numbers of human infections but also that they may cause neurological and other clinical complications, with sequelae or fatal consequences. In this review we attempt to highlight some of these features in the context of dengue virus pathogenesis.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease endemic in many countries in the tropics and sub-tropics. The disease affects mainly children, but in recent years it is becoming more of an adult disease. Malaysia experienced a large dengue outbreak in 2006 to 2007, involving mostly adults, with a high number of deaths. The authors undertook a retrospective study to examine dengue death cases in our hospital from June 2006 to October 2007 with a view to determine if there have been changes in the presentation of severe to fatal dengue.

Gujarat high court has issued a stern warning to authorities that officials would be personally held liable if unhygienic conditions at the Civil Hospital and across the city resulted in spread of malaria, dengue and falciparum next monsoon.

The court has said that all officials concerned would be held guilty of contempt of court if they are found not performing their duties and has warned that no excuse such as staff shortage or financial crunch will be considered.
