Natural disasters threaten to trigger widespread damage and distress in emerging economies, many of which are already on the brink because of the global recession, a United Nations body said on Sunday.

CHENNAI: With drinking water being supplied only once in five days, almost every container in homes in Tiruvottiyur is used to store water. Residents say that in the past one month the period of supply has been drastically reduced by half.

The drinking water to some of the villages in the Srinivaspur taluk is being supplied through tankers by the respective gram panchayats.

Facing flak from all corners over the existing water crisis, the severest one in the recent past, Indore Mayor Dr Umashashi Sharma here today tried to shift the blame for the crisis to scarce rainfall saying that the city in the last monsoon received only 517 mm of rainfall which is almost half of the average rainfall, the lowest in the past 38 years.

PARADIP: Various areas in the district are reeling under acute drinking water shortage due to the decline in groundwater level. The primary reason behind this is unregulated use of groundwater by the industries.

As many as seven large-scale industries and several auxiliary units are functioning in the district.

Residents of Bhatra, on the outskirts of Sambalpur town, struggle to get their share of water from tankers provided by the Sambalpur Municipality.

BRAJRAJNAGAR: Residents of Brajrajnagar have been in the grip of drinking water crisis for three days now.

The Spokesperson of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee JP Dhanopia said that the whole state is now facing the water crisis and in the capital of state not only human beings but animals also haven't been getting water for three days.
