The matter which was taken up by Garo National Council (GNC) legislator from Chokpot, Clifford R Marak in the form of a special motion said that the frequent water shortage in Tura was due to departmental negligence. “This is happening for too long. Shall I go for hunger strike in front of the Chief Minister’s office…then will the PHE department wake up,” Marak said.

About two lakh people in Palakkad’s Chittur taluk are facing acute drinking water shortage even as a high-level central team visited the drought-affected areas there on Tuesday.

Officials of the Kerala Water Resources Department said the shortage would be severe if Tamil Nadu did not release water from Parambikulam. Drought has already destroyed paddy cultivation to the tune of Rs 80 crore in the district. Chittur is the worst affected.

A Division Bench of the Kerala High Court on Tuesday directed the State government to inform the court about the steps being taken by it to solve the acute drinking water scarcity in the State.

The Bench comprising Justice K.M. Joseph and Justice K. Ramakrishnan also asked the government to state about the measures taken by it to tackle the drought situation.

At a time when the district is reeling under severe water crisis, the prime water source of over 30 families of a colony in Mundakayam has been contaminated by suspected poisoning by unidentified anti-social elements.

The confluence of two canals, Perithode and Manjalaruvy thode, has remained the sole drinking water supply source of Thonippara Colony for over 15 years. The water source has also been beneficial for over 200 families of Kannimala, the 15th ward of the Mundakayam grama panchayat, during the peak of summer.
