KOLKATA, 30 Jan: Although the Centre has allotted a handsome amount for providing relief to farmers of 11 drought-hit districts of Bengal, the state government may find it difficult to utilise the funds within the deadline.

Claiming that the farmers of the districts are in real distress, the cash-strapped state government had demanded funds from the National Calamity Contingency Funds.

BHUBANESWAR: The seven-member inter-ministerial team wrapped up its drought review exercise in the State after holding discussions with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik here on Friday.

The team, which visited eight drought-affected districts, admitted widespread crop loss.

In some areas, the crop loss is more than 70 per cent while in others the farmers have not harvested the crop.

The state government has declared 135 tehsils of 37 districts as drought-hit. Principal Secretary Revenue Shri Anil Shrivastava issued notification to this effect on Wednesday. The list of drought-hit tehsils is as follows:

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government on Tuesday identified 10,440 villages, spread over 15 of 30 districts, as drought-hit as more than 50 per cent of paddy crop was lost due to inadequate rainfall this monsoon.

The affected farmers in 10,440 villages and urban pockets will get compensation as announced by the state government earlier, revenue and disaster management minister Surya Narayan Patra
