One of the biggest challenges facing environmental law in India today is a weak implementation framework. Although laws, rules and regulations abound, compliance and enforcement are poor, with grave consequences for the environment and the rule of law.

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MOEFCC), in its recent notification, has prohibited manufacture, trade, import as well as export of household and decorative paints containing lead or lead compounds in excess of 90 parts per million (ppm).

The industrial sector is a significant contributor of stack emissions in India, from localised sources such as brick kilns and diesel generator sets, to large centralised facilities such as coal fired thermal power plants and oil refineries.
