LUCKNOW: In a fresh impetus to bettering urban infrastructure in major cities of the state, the government of India has named Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Kanpur, Meerut, Allahabad and Mathura as mission cities under the urban infrastructure and governance (UIG) scheme of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).

ALLAHABAD: The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to ensure that the tanneries in Kanpur are shifted to localities from where discharge of effluents into the Ganga can be effectively checked.
For decades, the narrow bridge on Ganga near Kanpur has been a bottleneck on National Highway 25, connecting Lucknow with Jhansi and other places in central India. However, the daily ordeal of motorists is likely to end soon as a parallel, wider bridge will be thrown open to the public in 2010.
