The once-pristine 57-acre Kacharakanahalli lake has been turned into a virtual landfill with the Bangalore Development Authority dumping mud and debris into it, gobbling up almost one third of the water body. Another part of the lake has a temple, a dhobi ghat, a slum and small patch of greenery.

The Supreme Court, in its landmark judgement in the case of Animal and Environment Legal Defence Fund vs Union of India,1997, and Susetha vs the State of Tamil Nadu, 2006, had pointed out that conservation of a lake was an equal responsibility of both the State and the citizens. But in 2011, the BDA in blatant violation of the top court’s verdict, went ahead and implemented its 1984-85 plan of converting the lake into a civic amenities site instead of reviving it.

The Subramanyapura lake in Uttarahalli, lying in a state of abject neglect for nearly five years, will get a fresh lease of life, with the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) set to take up rejuvenation work in association with other civic agencies and government bodies.

The decision follows BBMP Commissioner Siddaiah’s visit to the lake following reports in Deccan Herald about illegal dumping of debris and garbage into the water body, thus reducing its extent from 18.2 acre to 11.3 acre.

The Mestripalya Lake at Koramangala is likely to get a fresh lease of life, after nearly seven years, with the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) agreeing to fence the nine-acre lake bed soon. The BDA engineer in charge of the area told Deccan Herald that a Rs 12-lakh tender has been called to fence the lake and the work is expected to be executed in a week. The decision, however, came after much dillydallying in preparing the detailed project report (DPR), followed by getting approvals from the Lake Development Authority (LDA) and the Revenue Department.

Ministry of Forest and Soil Conservation has floated a plan of complete removal of the settlement and any other encroached forest land within five years.
