The Madras High Court on Thursday directed the Tirunelveli Collector to file a report on offshore emergency preparedness training at Nakkaneri in relation to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KKNPP).

A specially-constituted Division Bench of Justices P. Jyothimani and M. Duraiswamy, which is hearing a batch of writ petitions for and against the nuclear power project, said the Collector, who had been impleaded as a respondent, should file a report on the emergency preparedness exercises.

NPCIL to submit technical details to MoEF before starting work

With the first two units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) coming close to the stage of commissioning, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has received the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for starting work on the next four units (KKNPP units 3-6). The NPCIL has to submit a schematic diagram of its outfall and technical details to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) before commencing the work.

A fishermen's welfare organisation has filed a public interest litigation petition in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Member-Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) here to inspect the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project site along with experts, and later issue the consent order for operating the plant.
