Order of the Supreme Court of India in the matter of In Re: T. N. Godavarman Thirumulpad Vs Union of India & Others dated 23/04/2018 This is an application filed by M/s. Puntambekar Minerals for the purpose of mining bauxite near the Radhanagri sanctuary. The Court notes that the matter has been pending for a long time before being taken up by the Standing Committee of the National Board of Wildlife. NBW had asked the Government of Maharashtra to initiate action against mining units which are operating without obtaining approval from the National Board of Wildlife.

Around seven bauxite mines sit on the corridor linking Chandoli National Park to Radhanagari.

The National Green Tribunal’s powers to take up cases about wildlife have been challenged. The question of the tribunal’s jurisdiction has cropped up in a petition filed by an iron ore miner in Kohlapur, Maharashtra, asking for renewing his right to mine in a piece of land the government has said is a tiger corridor.

A year on, the prestigious tag seems to have had little impact on the way the state treats these ecologically sensitive areas.

Kolhapur: The forest department (wildlife) is developing a 60-km corridor to connect the Sahyadri Tiger Reserve (STR) to the Radhanagari Sanctuary to help regular migration of animals.

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday asked the state government to disclose its stand on the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel (WGEEP) report. The court had earlier said the report must be made public. The state government has been asked to file an affidavit by March 12.

The WGEEP report pertaining to the ecosystem of the western ghats was prepared by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) in 2010. The report covers the 35-km narrow strip of Sawantwadi-Dodamarg corridor that consists of 30 villages.
