Ropar: A large number of fish were found dead in the Sirsa-Nangal River today evening. Villagers from nearby Avankot village raised hue and cry on seeing a large number of fish floating dead on the surface of the river near the Sutlej-Sirsa confluence.

July 1: The Ganga remains in drastic need for a resuscitation. The Planning Commission has prepared a report on the water quality data of the river for 2008-2009 and found that despite crores being pumped in to revive the river, its biological oxygen demand (BOD) fails to meet even the standard bathing requirements.

KOCHI: District Collector M Beena, on Monday instructed the Water Authority, the Pollution Control Board and the Aluva Municipality to take steps to prevent the disposal of waste materials in the Periyar. The instruction was given at a meeting convened by the Human Rights Commission.

The High Court yesterday issued a set of directives for the government to save the rivers around the capital from encroachment and pollution.

It directed the deputy commissioners of Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur and Munshiganj to determine the exact boundaries of Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Turag and Balu rivers by November 30.

Braving the heat, over 7,000 people today marched to Harmu river, vowing to bring it back to life from deathbed.

Choosing the occasion of rath yatra to retrieve and de-pollute the river that runs through the state capital, they termed degradation of Harmu river as an attack on existence of nature and held selfish people responsible for it.

The Bombay High Court at Goa on Wednesday directed Sesa Goa to forthwith stop dumping mining waste near Advalpal rivulet. The Division Bench comprising Justice B P Dharmadhikari and Justice U D Salvi, on pursuing the report submitted by the expert committee, issued direction to stop dumping of mining rejects immediately to contain flooding of the area and destruction of paddy fields.

The residents of Serudandahela area staged a protest against the dumping of garbage in their village by the Naula Pradeshiya Sabha creating a serious health hazard. More than 500 protestors of all walks of life participated.

It would take eight more years before Yamuna can be cleaned, declared Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on the floor of the House of Delhi Assembly during the Budget session on Tuesday. The Chief Minister said there is no magic wand to clean Yamuna by 2010 Commonwealth Games.
