NEW DELHI: As against the need to install 15 common effluent treatment plants in Delhi, only 10 have been set up so far for the 51 industrial areas of the Capital at a cost of Rs.256 crore.

Malda, May 25: The public health engineering (PHE) department has shut down its two arsenic treatment plants at Mathurapur and Kahala near Manikchak as fish have started dying in the Phulhar river.

The PHE authorities are clueless why the fish are dying in the river.

The number of British beaches recommended for bathing has dropped by a record 16.5 percent because of poor weather last year, the Marine Conservation Society (MCS) said on Friday.

In its annual Good Beach Guide, the MCS said 370 beaches out of 777 tested were recommended for their excellent water quality, down from 444 in 2008.

The foremost priority should be to liberate Kshipra river from encroachments at its source of origin. It is a matter of concern that the river is vanishing within 13 kms from its emanating source, let alone the long distance. The govt maps have been changed and fields and roads have replaced the river in the map.

May 24: Scientists have urged people not to eat the popular vegetable alligator weed, known locally as Seema thotakura or Seema ponneganti, as it can cause serious health hazards.

New Delhi: Under the Yamuna Action Plan, about Rs 1,500 crore has been spent so far on cleaning the river and another project worth Rs 4,000 crore is ready to take off. This has, however, made little difference to the state of the river. Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit recently observed that the river was no better than a drain.
