Enable Block:

The Koshi Basin is the largest river basin of Nepal. It originates from the Tibetan Plateau of China. The Koshi river is also known as the "sorrow of Bihar". Floods from the Koshi river in the past have created havoc in the downstream area of Nepal and India leading to loss of lives and property and causing widespread human suffering. This report provides a preliminary assessment of the impacts of the Koshi flood disaster and rainfall forecasts.

The Story of Bihar

BANGALORE: The Government has said it will go ahead with the execution of the Kalasa-Banduri Nala (tributaries of the Mahadayi river) diversion scheme to serve the drinking water requirements of the people in Hubli-Dharwad, Gadag, Bagalkot and parts of Belgaum districts.

In a reply to the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's allegation that the Government would not be able to execute the project, Minister for Energy K.S. Eshwarappa said the project was kept in abeyance by the Centre following the opposition to it by Goa.

THRISSUR: There is no dearth of examples to substantiate the observations made the other day by Sukumar Azhikode - 'expert opinions are often untrue, farce' - while inaugurating dharna against the proposed Athirappilly hydroelectric project here.

An example is the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) on the project which was carried out by Water and Power Consultency Services Private Limited (WAPCOS), Hariyana.

The Kerala State Electricity Board had assigned the study to WAPCOS on October 8, 2002 and the consultants submitted the study report to KSEB next year.

WADAKKANCHERRY: Kalamandalam Vice- Chancellor K G Poulose has called upon the people of Kerala to protect rivers in the state.

Speaking at a discussion on

Tens of millions of people in south and southeast Asia routinely consume ground water that has unsafe arsenic levels. Using hydrologic and (bio)geochemical measurements, the researchers show that on the minimally disturbed Mekong delta of Cambodia, arsenic is released from near-surface, river-derived sediments and transported, on a centennial timescale, through the underlying aquifer back to the river.

South Asia's well-water is widely polluted with arsenic, but no one has located the source. A study on the Mekong River finds that contamination begins in pond sediments, and is spread by groundwater flow to wells.

Nature knows better how to keep the water sources clean and nourishing. Our traditions, also could maintain their water sources for the past 10,000 years. Water quality problems and water scarcity- both are due to pollution of air, caused by increase in the use of fossil fuels. This produces rain with nitrates and acidity. This pollutes the surface water bodies and also the groundwater.

ANOTHER intra-river linking project in the State is expected to take off shortly as the State Government has released Rs 50 crore for the first phase of the project.
The project involves linking the Tamirabarani, Nambiyar and Karumaeniyar rivers in Tirunelveli district to divert floodwater to the rain deficient districts of Radhapuram, Nanguneri and Sattankulam taluks.

Making the announcement here on Friday , District Collector (in charge), G Srinivasan, said a Government Order to this effect was issued in the last week of June.

NEW DELHI: India and Bangladesh made some progress during the Foreign Secretary-level talks here on Thursday on the water issue that has often vitiated public opinion on both sides of the border. They also discussed the Bilateral Investment Protection Agreement (BIPA) that could be a precursor to normal economic ties between the two countries.
