The Sri Lankan government has taken measures to improve the aging power transmission network in rural areas of the country with the support from the Asia Development Bank.

The Ministry of Power and Energy said the present power transmission network which was over 60 years old cannot handle the present day needs.

Sindh government will energise 795 villages involving a cost of Rs 10,000 million under Village Electrification Programme in Sindh while phase II to provide electrification facilities throughout Sindh province under Chief Minister's directives through elected representatives of respective areas.

The provision of electricity is still a dream for many villagers in the remote areas of Keamari town.

The villagers told Dawn that the Sindh government had released funds to the Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) for the electrification of four villages in Keamari Town, which are Mubarak Village, Maullah Dad Lethi Goth, Noor Muhammad Goth and Abdullah Goth.

The Government has taken steps to launch 2,225 electrification projects at a cost of Rs. 5025 million. Accordingly all remaining power projects will be completed by 2012 and this will cost an additional sum of Rs.1,650 million, the Ceylon Electricity Board stated.
