Panaji: The Centre has conveyed to Goa government that there is no provision to denotify approved and notified Special Economic Zones (SEZs).

The commerce ministry in a letter to the Goa government has said that there is no provision to denotify approved and notified Special Economic Zones (SEZs). "We have received such a letter and will be taking a stand within a couple of days after thorough discussion on the issue," State Chief Secretary J P Singh said this evening. The commerce ministry's refusal to denotify three SEZs has come as a tough challenge for the state government that will now have to take stand on the issue within two weeks.

The central com merce ministry has declined the Goa government's request to denotify the three SEZ's that were granted final approval. The three SEZ's are K Raheja's SEZ at Verna, Meditab Specialities at Keri, and Peninsula Pharma at Sancoale, Goa.

As many as 1,056 houses with 3,987 people in 16 villages, are likely to vanish due to the Vodarevu and Nizampatnam port infrastructure corridor (Vanpic) project in Prakasam district which will be set up at Rs 16,000 crore. SEZ Act, 2005 was passed by Parliament in May 2005 and received Presidential assent on 23rd June 2005. A large number SEZs have been given in-priniciple approvals, in different parts of India.

Land alienation, poverty amongst scheduled tribes and dalits and lack of access to basic forest resources have contributed to the growth of naxalism, says the Planning Commission. Its report,

Around 87 Special Economic Zones (SEZs) projects have been notified in the entire country. Rs 60,000 crore would be invested in these projects. Two SEZ projects have also been sanctioned for Chhindwara district. Under this project footware designing and construction training related institutions worth crores would be established, Union Commerce and Industries Minister, Kamalnath informed on Tuesday. With the establishment of SEZ in Chhindwara not only this district would be benefited but the adjoining areas would also get its benefit.
