NAIROBI - Up to a quarter of global food production could be lost by 2050 due to the combined impact of climate change, land degradation and loss, water scarcity and species infestation, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

Underscoring the need for attaining a healthy agricultural growth rate for effectively addressing the concerns of poverty and hunger, Assam Governor Shiv Charan Mathur today said that horticulture, in particular, had immense scope for commercial exploitation.

The number of hungry people in the world swelled by 40 million to touch the 923-million mark in 2008, chiefly due to higher food prices. More people could be pushed into hunger if the ongoing financial and economic crisis continues, a United Nations body has warned.
