The tourist village of Colva is grappling with the problem of garbage collection and disposal. It’s one of the few coastal villages still facing a ban on multi-dwelling units since the last three years for want of waste disposal mechanism.

Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) report filed in the high court in July this year only showed there’s no improvement at the ground level, with the Board recommending further curbs and restrictions on further development, construction in the village until the implementation of the provisions of Rural Garbage Disposal Scheme, 2005.

Jorhat, Sept.

Segregation of garbage at source into dry waste, wet waste and plastic waste will be made mandatory across Bangalore from October 1.

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Wednesday issued a notification to this effect, and warned that residents who do not implement this rule will be penalised. Responding to the hue and cry raised by many residents’ welfare associations, NGOs and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB), the BBMP finally came out with a nine-point “Action Plan” to deal with the 4,500 tonnes of waste generated in Bangalore daily.

Mumbai The mining ban imposed by the state government of Goa is unlikely to have a major impact on the likes of iron miner Sesa Goa as the current quarter is a lean season for mining in the state, analysts said on Tuesday.

“Seasonally, Q2 is the weakest quarter for Sesa Goa, where it sells only 10-12% of its annual output, given the monsoon in Goa,” said Bhavesh Chauhan, metals analyst at Mumbai-based brokerage Angel Broking. Meanwhile, Sesa Goa said on Tuesday that it has begun efforts to ensure early restart of the company’s operations in the state.

Manufacturing units and other industries may have to pay penalties if they don’t manage solid waste generated by them at source.

The government plans to introduce legislation that will mandate manufacturers to segregate waste at source, said Urban Development Minister S Suresh Kumar. Kumar made the announcement on Tuesday, while addressing commissioners of city and town municipal councils from across Karnataka. He was speaking at a workshop organised by the Municipal Administration department on garbage disposal and management.

Basavanakatte lake in Kengeri hobli, once a vital water body in the area, has now been reduced to a dumpyard of plastic waste. Lack of conservation efforts by the authorities has left the lake to die a slow death.

Heaps of burnt and unburnt plastic wastes are dumped here illegally, polluting the water body and its surroundings. But the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike authorities and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board seem to be oblivious.
