Over 700 families in Tehri have been left temporarily homeless after heavy rainfall and thunderstorms wreaked havoc in the hill district of Garhwal.

The National Green Tribunal in the 38-page verdict on March 21, 2016  constituted a committee and asked it to submit a report regarding construction activities by Darrameks Hotels & Developers Private Limited on banks and the flood plains of river Ganga at village Singtali , District Tehri Garhwal, in Uttarakhand. The green tribunal also stated that the hotel authorities shall be liable to pay environmental compensation of Rs. 20 Lakh for violating the conditions set in the Consent to Establish issued by the Uttaranchal Environment Protection & Pollution Control Board (UEPPCB) and for disturbing the immediate/direct catchment of the river Ganga by changing the drainage pattern through the use of JCBs for levelling the area.

The provision of declaring Biodiversity Heritage Sites (BHS) in the National Biodiversity Act 2002 provides an opportunity to give recognition to the community initiatives vis-a-vis the institution of the sacred natural sites (SNS). In brief, the salient feature of the Biodiversity Act 2002, as relates to the BHS, is that the state government in consultation with the local bodies may notify in official gazette, biodiversity rich areas, including the SNS as BHS.
