THERE is more trouble in store for South Korean steel maker Posco

The staff of Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park have rescued a sea turtle weighing 40 kg when it reached Therkk u va d i s e a s h o re, n e a r Mandapam, for laying eggs on Wednesday.

This was the first time that a sea turtle had waded ashore to lay eggs in a dense area after 1977 and the turtle laid 107 healthy eggs.

The Posco steel plant and port planned in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district have run into fresh trouble. An expert appraisal committee (EAC) of the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests deferred its decision on clearing the port project, saying the South Korean steel giant did not furnish sufficient details.

BHUBANESWAR: Will the spectacular sight of mass congregation of endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles for mating and nesting on the beaches of Gahirmatha become history?

The beaches coming under the Gahirmatha Marine Wildlife Sanctuary have shrunk considerably.

Any time now female Olive Ridley turtles will start crawling on beaches in and around the city. When they do, it will be among the few times they will leave the sea to perform one of the most important activities of their lives -- laying eggs. They will then leave and return only in time for the next nesting season.

The drivers of discord between humans and wild species often lie deeper than the shallow measuring implements of science can reach. We explore the lived experience of conflict between fishing communities and turtles in two very different socio-ecological contexts in the Lakshadweep Islands and the Orissa coast.

Based on our studies in Norway and India, and the rapidly expanding scientific literature in this field, it is safe to say that human-wildlife conflicts are a universal state of affairs. This is a serious issue because it represents a long term threat to the persistence of wildlife as well as negatively affecting the lives of millions of people. Our conflict research is motivated by a desire to identify paths towards conflict reduction and mitigation, for the benefits of both people and wildlife.
