Air quality improves but remains ‘poor’

Gurgaon: Air pollution levels reduced nearly 39%on Wednesday as compared to that of Tuesday, with the highest levels of PM2.5 at 142.57 micrograms per cubic metre ('poor' category).

Effect of air quality alerts on human health: a regression discontinuity analysis in Toronto, Canada

Ambient air pollution is a major health risk globally. To reduce adverse health effects on days when air pollution is high, government agencies worldwide have implemented air quality alert programmes. Despite their widespread use, little is known about whether these programmes produce any observable public-health benefits. We assessed the effectiveness of such programmes using a quasi-experimental approach.

Question raised in Lok Sabha on Air Quality, 15/12/2017. Central Pollution Control Board is monitoring ambient air quality in 691 locations covering 303 cities/towns in 29 States and 6 Union Territories across the country
under National Air Quality Monitoring Programme (NAMP). Out of 303 cities, PM2.5 is being monitored in 79 cities and 31 cities exceeded the PM2.5of 40 μg/m3. The list of these cities is given in Annexure.

Order of the National Green Tribunal regarding air pollution in cities of Kerala, 04/12/2017

Order of the National Green Tribunal (Southern Zone, Chennai) in the matter of Lawyers Environmental Awareness Forum (LEAF) Vs State of Kerala & Others dated 04/12/2017 regarding air pollution in cities of Kerala.

The Court observed that by order dated 05.08.2016, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) was directed to file a report on the Ambient Air Quality (AAQ) of cities of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kochi, Thrissur, Calicut and Kannur within one month and that report is yet to be filed. NGT directs the report to be filed by 16.01.2018.

Poor air quality is one of the leading five health risks worldwide, along with high blood pressure, tobacco smoking, diabetes and being overweight. In 2015, it contributed to nearly 8% of all deaths worldwide. Long-term exposure to polluted air has been linked to respiratory infections, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, heart attack and lung cancer. It is justifiably called ‘passive outdoor smoking’.
