New Delhi: Days are becoming colder in the month of January in the capital in recent decades and pollution could be playing a role in forcing the trend, warn experts. In terms of day temperatures, January this year is in line to be the coldest in a decade and third coldest since 1947. It will also be the fifth consecutive year when Delhi’s average maximum temperature in January has remained below the normal of 20.8 degrees Celsius.

Collective efforts by a group of individuals have brought a welcome change in the landscape of the holy city of Varanasi that once had abundant water bodies like ponds and pools or kunds.

These kunds, considered as sacred precincts, served as waters for ritual bathing in a religious city. In past few decades, these water bodies have been vanishing with some being completely depleted and encroached upon by vested interests.

According to a World Bank Sponsored Study (State of Environment Report- U.P.) pollution levels in the Ganga are contributing 9-12% of total disease burden in Uttar Pradesh. This recent report by Christian Aid based on study across 12 Indian cities explores whether they are ready to withstand climate-related disasters and presents detailed report for these cities including policy implications in relation to Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA).

This study initiates a discourse on urban risk reduction, inclusive of disaster and cl

In certain areas of Varanasi city, waste water from Dinapur sewage treatment plant is used for irrigating vegetable plots. We quantified the concentrations of heavy metals, viz. After being lambasted for mindless spending over "dream projects" full of statues, Mayawati has decided to change her outlook on expense. The chief minister has already spent over Rs 2,600 crore on building memorials and parks and named them after Dalit icons, herself included.
