Anopheles culicifacies is the major vector of both falciparum and vivax malaria in Sri Lanka, while Anopheles subpictus and certain other species function as secondary vectors. In Sri Lanka, An. culicifacies is present as a species complex consisting of species B and E, while An. subpictus exists as a complex of species A-D. The freshwater breeding habit of An. culicifacies is well established.

Malaria which was widespread in a few villages of Bijapur and Bagalkot districts, located at the tail end of Krishna River, has been brought under control.

Out of the 3,500 blood samples colletected from several villages, only 236 have tested positive for the disease, said Malaria Prevention Unit

Stored water ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes in summer

Ahmedabad: Rising mercury level have provided conducive environment for breeding of aedes aegypti mosquito on account of accumulating stagnant water. According to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), more than 55 cases of dengue have been reported till now.

Madhya Pradesh plans to launch a mass anti-filaria drug administration programme to curb a disease spread by culex mosquito bite which causes permanent swelling of a patient's hands and feet.

DHENKANAL: Malaria has broken out in predominantly tribal Sorisapada gram panchayat (GP) of Gondia block in Dhenkanal district. Sources said the disease has claimed four kids in the past one week though official sources confirmed only one death.

Mumbai: Nearly 30% of the people who died of malaria in Mumbai last year were living alone and devoid of any familial support. The information was chanced upon by civic officials while conducting an audit of malarial deaths in the city in 2009.

In October, when dengue mosquitoes begin breeding, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) will be ready with its squad to tackle the menace. The civic body is setting up eight new control rooms that will stock pesticides for prompt action. The council is also training its health officers in using pesticides to check the incidence of mosquito-related diseases during the Commonwealth Games.
