THE Vellore Forest Division has removed encroachment by farmers from around 450 acres of forest land from border villages in Gudiyattam and Odugathur ranges in the past three months, thanks to the support given by the Village Forest Councils and local bodies.
Except in Madigam village in Odugathur range, where the encroachers had resisted the eviction move, but later conceded, the oper ation, according to the Divional Forest Officer (DFO) T V Manjunatha, was smooth and productive.

He was here on Wednesday to visit the Veterinary University and Training Center, functioning since 1981 for the benefit of livestock and poultry.

V NarayanaMurthi THE Olympic Games to be held this August in China appears to be playing a cruel game on the lives of thousands of people of Gudiyattam, near Vellore, who are engaged in handmade and mechanised match factories. The banning of export of phosphorus by the Chinese Government in an effort to have a green Olympics has increased the cost of this key raw material. China is the major supplier of phosphorus to many countries including India.

VELLORE and and its surroundings experienced mild tremors at 11.40 pm on Saturday. According to sources, the tremor, which lasted for about a minute, was felt in places like Sathuvacheri, Otteri, Shenbakkam, Kinamattom, Bagayam, Saidapet, Infantry Road and Officers Line in the Fort City. Reports about tremors in Vaniyambadi and Arni, also poured in late in the night. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Vellore Range) T P Sundaramurthy, who confirmed the mild tremors, said that police had alerted all units in the district and adjacent areas for any eventualities.

AIADMK general secretary Jayalalithaa on Monday urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to take steps to prevent the Andhra Pradesh government from going ahead with its plans to construct 10 checkdams across the Ponnaiyaru. In a statement here Ms Jayalalithaa said the Ponnaiyaru was the source of drinking water for Vellore, Kancheepuram, Thiruvallur and Thiruvannamalai districts and construction of check dams would deprive these districts of their drinking water supply. The Ponnaiyaru originates in Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh and confluences with the Palar in Thiruvalam near Vellore.

In the present study, an attempt has been made to evaluate the treatability of a combined tannery and domestic wastewater using lab-scale activated sludge reactor under extended aeration.
