The IT capital is the only city in the country that employs qualified doctors, some of them specialists, to manage garbage.

Apparently, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP) is yet to wake up to the fact that there is a discipline in engineering called Environmental Engineering. For, Palike does not employ a single Environmental Engineer while it has to collect more than 3,500 tonnes of garbage every day, transport and dispose it at scientific landfills.

Mumbai, July 24 A training on e-waste for members of several urban municipal corporations from the western region on Thursday turned into a brainstorming session of sorts when the civic officials highlighted their difficulties in handling not just electronic wastes but also bio-medical wastes in their cities due to absence of proper regulation.

Hyderabad, July 21: Top companies such as Maytas Infra, Coromandal Fertilisers, Ramky Enviro Engineers, Delhi-based Jindal Water Infrastructure, and Bengaluru's Terra Fima Biotechnologies are vying to grab a project for segregation of garbage in Hyderabad. Several other firms from Noida, Navi Mumbai, Surat, New Delhi and Chennai are also in the reckoning.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is setting up the project to segregate garbage at source to keep the city environs free of toxic waste. As many as 22 companies from all over India have come forward to take up the project.

Nature knows better how to keep the water sources clean and nourishing. Our traditions, also could maintain their water sources for the past 10,000 years. Water quality problems and water scarcity- both are due to pollution of air, caused by increase in the use of fossil fuels. This produces rain with nitrates and acidity. This pollutes the surface water bodies and also the groundwater.

Collecting garbage on a door-to-door basis in the Commercial Capital is likely to be a costly affair for the cash-starved Margao Municipal Council.
As if the nightmares over Sonsodo weren't enough, the Civic body may have to pool all their resources in view of recent high court directives mandating Civic bodies to undertake door-to-door waste collection in segregated manner.

MARGAO, JULY 14 - The Fatorda Block Congress Committee has said it would support local residents against the Sonsodo dump yard and urged Chief Minister, Digambar Kamat to ensure there's no further delay in starting work on a proper solid waste management plant at the dumping site.

By Basavaraj Itnaal, DH News Service, Bangalore: To cut costs while increasing service delivery, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) in its new garbage contracts has authorised contractors to collect service charges from hotels, choultries and other major commercial establishments. Though the terms of the existing contracts require the contractors to clear garbage from all commercial establishments, commercial activity has grown much faster than the projected rate.

Kolar, DHNS: Revenue Department will soon set in motion the process to acquire 650 acres of land required for implementation of Yaragol project. A sum of Rs 13 crore will be released to the Department within a week in this behalf.
