The loss of natural habitats through destructive anthropogenic activities has been identified as one of the major drivers of environmental degradation. This is even more prevalent in developing countries where poverty and ignorance of the value of biodiversity is rampant. A pilot study was conducted in two highland wetlands in central Kenya to compile baseline data through the use of field survey, questionnaire and subsequent seminars.

Kolleru is one of Asia's largest fresh water lakes, spread over an area of 90,100 ha and located between the Godavari and Krishna river basins of Andhra Pradesh. This fragile wetland ecosystem is under severe threat due to human interventions in the lake and in the upstream catchment area as well as in the downstream.

Assam's environment ministry has identified four wetlands: Jon-Beel, Kaziranga, Dhar Beel and Bordoibam Bilmukh.
It is pushing for their status as Ramsar sites.

The State Government has submitted a proposal to the Centre for the preservation of all the wetlands in Assam, said the Minister in charge of Environment and Forest, Rockybul Hussain. In reply to a Zero Hour question by Ananta Deka (CPM) in the State Assembly today, the Minister said that the State has 3513 wetlands covering an area of 101239 hectares.

The Asian Waterbird Census (AWC), conducted each year in January, is a waterbird and wetland-monitoring programme initiated in 1987 within the framework of the International Waterbird Census. This report summarises the results of the AWC from 1987 to 2007, comprising counts at 6,705 sites in 27 countries.

Coimbatore: Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests (Independent charge) Jairam Ramesh on Sunday said that the Ministry would widely expand projects for conservation of inland wetlands and coastal areas facing the threat of destruction.

Experts here view the present move of the State Government to amend the Assam Embankment and Drainage (E&D) Act, 1953 as a good chance to enlarge the scope of the legislation to cover many areas of activities connected with the Water Resources Department (WRD). The Act came into effect in 1954 and it is the basic legislation for the Water Resources Department.
