California - the top wind producer in the US since the 1980s lost its lead in 2008 in the face of intense competition from other states. But backed by strong financial and political support from the government, California's wind energy sector is slowly making a comeback.

How can wind energy in India achieve 20 per cent grid penetration by 2020? Wind experts believe massive growth in the Indian market can be achieved if a unified grid policy is promulgated for the whole country.

NEW DELHI: Siemens on Tuesday announced its plans to invest Rs. 1,600 crore in India over the next three years for its wind turbine manufacturing venture and for expanding its existing production capacity.

The state of Karnataka is bestowed with good wind energy potential. Of the 48,561 MW wind energy potential identified by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) for the country, 12,950 MW has been assessed for Karnataka. According to the Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited, the total wind power installed capacity as of January 2010 stands at 1,368 MW.
