The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday ruled that it cannot hear appeals against forest clearances given to projects by the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

The Supreme Court today said it was worried about the “underlying dynamics”, with steel manufacturers pitching for resumption of mining operations in Karnataka instead of lease holders of iron ore mines.

A special Forest Bench, headed by Justice Aftab Alam, said despite the lease holders of iron ore mines having zero production, they were not seeking relief, but steel manufacturers were.

Essar Power today said it has received 'stage 1' forest clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests for its Mahan coal block in Madhya Pradesh.

Ministry Takes Advantage Of Loophole In Law

The environment and forests ministry (MoEF) will not approach the Supreme Court to alter its judgment on norms for environment and forest clearances, minister Jayanthi Natarajan said on Monday.

New Delhi Environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan, who has raised objections to the proposed National Investment Board (NIB), on Monday said that she would speak to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the issue.

“We will speak to the PM about the reservations we have on the issue. Whatever I have to say, I will say it in the Cabinet to the PM. But I will protect the interest of the environment,” she said.

CSE has strongly rebutted the Union ministry of finance's claim that green clearances are leading to inordinate delays in infrastructure projects and has also rejected the proposal to set up a National Investment Board (NIB), which will dismantle the regulatory systems for green clearances.
