The State Government plans to give incentives to CBSE schools for smart steps to save power, Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed has said.

3,000 MW of solar energy to be added in second phase of national solar mission. Off-grid solar applications and grid-connected rooftop panels will be given more importance in the second phase of the ongoing Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). Started in early 2010, the mission is a flagship programme of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) to promote solar energy in the country. The government plans to add 3,000 MW of solar power in the second batch of JNNSM which aims to infuse 20 GW of solar energy by 2017.

This review by Prayas Energy Group focuses on the technical, social, economic, institutional, and policy aspects of DRE micro-grids in India. Finds that while decentralised renewable energy (DRE) micro-grids have significant potential in remote area, the high incidence of project and system failures suggests that there are several unresolved technical, socio-economic and institutional factors that fundamentally impact its long-term sustainability.

Solar energy project launched at Central Prison, Poojappura

If the State does not come up with alternative sources of power generation, it will face a severe power crisis by 2020, Minister for Electricity Aryadan Mohammed has said. He was speaking at the switch-on ceremony of a solar energy project set up at the Central Prison, Poojappura, in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday. Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan inaugurated the project.

The potential of wind energy in solving the energy crisis is significant and the small wind turbines popularly known as SWTs are poised to go a long way in achieving energy empowerment for rural India. This article seeks to explain the mechanism behind the technology of SWTs.

New Delhi: The Delhi environment department has identified 25 government schools and 10 government hospitals that will get independent solar power systems.

Forum of regulators expects to promote involvement of private sector

Development of off-grid renewable energy (OGRE) projects with capacity up to 300 Mw would get a major boost after the Forum of Regulators (FoR) issues guidelines in October. The guidelines would also come in handy for electricity regulatory commissions to determine tariff in such projects. Off-grid renewable energy projects are standalone systems generating electricity from renewable energy sources. They are not connected to the grid. A network, including associated appliances, is used for distributing the electricity.

Supply issues comprise one part of the energy conundrum, as we discussed last fortnight. The cost of energy and our ability to pay for it is the other. The matter gets vexed because the rise in price of raw material of all energy sources is accompanied by huge inefficiency in distribution and accounting. But importantly, we remain a poor country where cost of energy is a factor in its availability and accessibility for all.
