Ariyalur, the land of fossils, is found to be embedded with rich limestone deposits. Hence around 9 cement factories have been established in and around Ariyalur. This becomes one of the source of air pollution in this area.
'Sella' rice plant effluent is one of the major environmental pollutants. The physico-chemical characterization of effluent collected from three 'Sella' rice plants revealed that the pH of the effluent varied from 6.9-7.4 and effluent was yellow brown in colour and turbid.
In developing country like India greater attention has been focused so far only on the ground water pollution. Unlike water the study on the soil contamination has not been much attended yet. In this background, it becomes necessary to study the soil contamination in Dindigul, where the soil is mostly degraded by tannery effluents.

The western zone of Virudhunagar district in south Tamil Nadu depends upon the surface water from Pillavakkal irrigation system, comprising a number of interconnected surface tanks. The increase in agricultural products and industrial zones in this terrain results in an essential investigation of the surface water quality and soil parameter.
