Laboratory studies were conducted to assess the influence of media related factors such as particle size, porosity, pore size and specific surface area on performance of upflow anaerobic biofilters (AnBFs). Three simple models of 8 litres capacity upflow anaerobic biofilters packed with support media granite of size 40 mm, 20 mm and 10 mm respectively were installed.

Human beings are known to suffer from major allergens such as pollen grains, fungal spores, house dust mites, animal dander and food stuff present in the atmosphere. In India about 20% of population suffers from major allergic diseases such as bronchial asthma, allergic rhinitis, eczema, hay fever etc. Pollinosis is caused by the pollen of grasses and other flowering plants.

Effects of industrial effluents on germination, growth, protein content and metal accumulation patterns in Hibiscus esculentus L. were studied. Effluent from two factories in the industrial belt of Cochin, Kerala were used to soak the seeds for germination and to irrigate the seedlings in the field after physico-chemical analysis.

The study involves the atomic absorption analysis of four selected heavy metals lead, cadmium, zinc and copper pollution in the soil samples of Pala municipality. A total of 120 surface soil samples (0-5 cm) and corresponding 120 sub-surface soil samples (5-10 cm) were collected from industrial, agricultural, road side and institutional areas.

The histopathological studies are useful in evaluating the pollution potential of toxicants since trace levels of chemicals do not bring about animal mortality over a given period and are capable of inducing considerable damage to organ.

Dhaka city produces tonnes of solid wastes everyday. Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) does not have any sanitary landfill for ultimate disposal of solid waste and for a long time it is a common practice of DCC to dipose off solid waste in open low lying areas without any segregation andf soil cover.

The trace metal levels were studied in soil and water of Tipong, Tirap and Tikak Collieries of Makum Coal Field, Tinsukia, Assam. The toxic trace metals were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). On the basis of the results obtained, it is clear that continuous mining operations have left permanent scars in the coalfield environmental scenario to a large extent.

This present work deals with the addition and dilution effects of carbon dioxide and nitrogen with intake air on emissions and performance characteristics.
