It is conventional wisdom that it is possible to reduce exposure to indoor air pollution, improve health outcomes, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions in the rural areas of developing countries through the adoption of improved cooking stoves.

Cities are beginning to test ideas and share their experience in developing adaptation plans and identifying adaptive measures. However, the approaches cities are taking to prepare for climate impacts and the overall scope of activity associated with adaptation have not been assessed.

This MIT study examines the role of coal as an energy source in a world where constraints on carbon emissions are adopted to mitigate global warming. The study’s particular emphasis is to compare the performance and cost of different coal combustion technologies when combined with an integrated system for CO2 capture and sequestration.
