Guwahati: The evidence of the presence of tiger has been established in Namdapha using the modern census technique by Guwahati based bio-diversity conservation and research organisation, Aaranyak.

The study was carried out in collaboration with the Arunachal Forest Department under the Directorate of the Namdapha Tiger Reserve. This is the first time that a tiger has been captured in a camera trap since attempts was made as early as from 1996 by Bangalore based Wildlife Conservation Society.

Itanagar: The water level of the Siang river at Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh rose slightly this morning after it sharply fell last evening causing panic among people.

Though Pasighat Deputy Commissioner, Talem Tapok said the rise in the water level could be because of heavy rainfall in the catchment areas last night, government officials said they would request the Centre to investigate the causes.

Itanagar: Researchers have discovered a new species of fish in Kalpangi River in Yazali under Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh.

The new species, Garra Kalpangi, was named after the river from where it was discovered, officials said today. The team included K Nebeshwar from Manipur University, Kenjum Bagra Research Officer at Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board and D N Das of Rajiv Gandhi University. The discovery of the new species was mentioned in an article published in the February, 2012 edition of the Journal of Threatened Taxa, a wildlife and conservation journal.

Camera trapping method has been used for the first time in the ongoing tiger census in the Namdapha National Park in Changlang district of Arunachal Pradesh.

A committee appointed by the National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) to study the case visited the site and said the dam would harm the grassland ecosystem, and the Bengal bustard and wild water buffaloe — both highly endangered species — that live in it, as well as fragmenting the habitat of the Gangetic dolphin downstream, and submerging a nearby conservation area of medicinal plants.

However, the State government officials insist that neither the grasslands nor conservation area would be submerged, adding that there are no reports of sighting the Gangetic dolphin near the proposed dam site.
